Three-dimensional Morphology of the Sigmoid Notch of the Ulna in Kenyapithecus and Proconsul

چکیده
The three-dimensional (3-D) morphology of the sigmoid notch was examined in Kenyapithecus, Proconsul, and several living anthropoids by using an automatic 3-D digitizer. It was revealed that Kenyapithecus and Proconsul exhibit a very similar morphology of the distal region of the sigmoid notch; including the absence of a median keel and a downward sloped coronoid process. In addition, the proximal region of the sigmoid notch is curved more acutely relative to the distal region in Proconsul. This morphological complex is unique and not found in the examined living primates. The benefits of 3-D morphometries are discussed.

Validation of the lesser sigmoid notch of the ulna as a reference point for accurate placement of a prosthesis for the head of the radius: a cadaver study.
We undertook a study on eight arms from fresh cadavers to define the clinical usefulness of the lesser sigmoid notch as a landmark when reconstructing the length of the neck of the radius in replacement of the head with a prosthesis. The head was resected and its height measured, along with several control measurements. This was compared with in situ measurements from the stump of the neck to t...
متن کاملFirst hominoid from the Miocene of Ethiopia and the evolution of the catarrhine elbow.
The first known fossil ape from the early-middle Miocene of Fejej, Ethiopia, is described here. The specimen, FJ-18SB-68, is a partial ulna from a locality dated by 40Ar/39Ar and paleomagnetic methods to a minimum age of 16.18 MYA. Compared to a variety of extant and fossil ulnae, FJ-18SB-68 is most similar to Turkanapithecus, Proconsul, and Pliopithecus, and appears to have been an arboreal qu...
متن کاملApithecus Postcranial Specimens from Nachola, Kenya
Twenty nine postcranial specimens of a Kenyapithecus species, discovered at Nachola during the field seasons 1984 and 1986, are described in detail. The specimens come from baboon-sized animals, with a baboon-like degree of sexual dimorphism in size. This species of Kenyapithecus was a predominantly arboreal animal, utilizing a combination of pronograde quadrupedalism and orthograde climbing an...
متن کاملPersistent Medial Subluxation of the Ulna with Radiotrochlear Articulation
Two patients-one with a terrible triad fracture dislocation and one with an anterior olecranon fracture dislocation—weretreated for maltracking of the elbow (medial subluxation). The radial head articulated with the lateral trochlea while theulnar trochlear notch was perched over the medial trochlea. The late revision surgery could not correct the subluxationbecause the joints were accustomed t...
متن کاملThree-dimensional reconstruction of New Zealand rabbit antebrachium by multidetector computed tomography
The aim of this study was to reveal biometric peculiarities of New Zealand white rabbit antebrachium (radius and ulna) by means of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) images. Under general anesthesia, the antebrachiums of a total of sixteen rabbits of both sexes were scanned with a general diagnostic MDCT. Biometric measurements of the reconstructed...
